🇵🇸
After witnessing the escalation of violence and oppression towards Palestinian civilians perpetuated in the name of the Israeli state in Gaza and ideological groups and the army in the West Bank, we – Student Council of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut – mourn and grieve.
We stand with the victims of apartheid, systemic oppression, dispossession, racism, xenophobia, ethnic cleansing and genocide, in this case, of Palestinians, not just when it is broadcasted in the news. We stand for the full respect of their lives, their dignity and for their liberation, as well as in support of those who stand in solidarity with them.
As artists, students and alumni, we question and inquire the ways power works, in governmental and administrative bodies, in geopolitics, in ourselves. Therefore, we can’t be quiet and normalize the atrocities that perpetuate imperialist and colonial violence and oppression.
This Friday (October 20th, 2023), we will join the general strike as we believe that life can not go on while a massacre and a humanitarian catastrophe is happening before our eyes. In times when Palestinian human rights are under attack, we want to send a clear message of solidarity, also to those students and community members who feel isolated and alone in a Western context that clearly has decided to support an oppressive regime.
We see it as censorship when those demonstrating solidarity and those who speak out against these atrocities are punished, as well as the favorable coverage of the dominant Israeli and US backed narrative on various news outlets, and the algorithmic bias on social media. Therefore, we strongly feel that we should take a clear stance in protest to this ongoing violence and its structural support, urgently feeling the need to say stop!
We encourage our fellow students to take a position of support as well, and protest by joining the strike. We encourage our fellow students to raise funds, assist in demonstrations, share information, come together for collective grieving, radical care and imagination, or in any other form that speaks to you.
As Student Council we want to keep on supporting different paths for community strengthening. Hence we will continue promoting and pushing for students to come together and critically assemble, tightening our connections in times of solitude and need.
With love,
Student Council
