Dapper is a temporary community and project space, located on the Dappermarkt in Amsterdam-Oost, run by Rietveld & Sandberg student and alumni, alongside students from KABK and Wageningen University. The programming is grounded in arts.

A free publication run by students of Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. The Rietveld Journal is an inter-departmental publication. Their goal is to draw a picture of what Rietveld students and alumni have to offer on a predominantly textual based platform. With the Rietveld Journal the makers want to break through the walls of the school, going beyond the Rietveld bubble in order to reach a different and broad(er) public.
A public fountain for the Sandberg and Rietveld community was made from ceramics. The fountain automatically dispensed red wine from its eyes. The sculpture form referred to a modern interpretation of a Maenad, the female worshippers of ‘the Bacchae’.

Tramfest is an art, music and public transport festival that took place at and in collaboration with the tram museum, Rietveld’s neighbour. Thirteen Rietveld students exhibited site specific work both inside and outside the trams. The project was seen as not only a presentation to the outside world, but also an exchange.

This project was intended for anyone who identifies as queer and looking for a sense of community an togetherness with the Rietveld and Sandberg community. Vegan Lesbian Curry created a monthly inclusive and queer communal space by preparing and serving a vega curry meal for queer people. By doing this they offered a listening ear and a community.

Wildplakzuilen was a citywide action for public expression and free speech, as well as an act of reclaiming graphic public space in the city. As the graphic domain in the cities is dominated by advertisement, the initiators felt an urge to activate graphic space for its inhabitants.
A joint cooking and eating take over workshop of the Glass Pavilion.
Organizing a group of interested people from Rietveld and Sandberg to learn about Amsterdam’s colonialist history in relation to art and culture. The group will visit existing Amsterdam tours, do independent research, and end its process with a publication/guide for the Rietveld/Sandberg community.

Currently many projects at the academy circulate about the topic of food. In the course of the last weeks a portable kitchen, from mostly reused-materials, has been built. Now it is accessible for everyone who wants to use it.

Architecture and urbanism can be seen as a network with different knots or parts all working in relation. This project was about studying the impact that the modification of a part of a network can have on the social practices that takes place into it. Water, being here the network impacted comes first from a source. What if we recreate a source of water, a hub, inside the campus to try to rethink our water network in a more sustainable and socially impacting way.

Conscious Canteen works to get rid of one time-use things in the canteen. In the future we hope to be connected with local farmers to provide food and work together with the school-garden.

BODY SESSION is an initiative for regular embodied sessions, open to the whole Rietveld/Sandberg community. The sessions are bi-monthly and 2hr long, led by choreographers, dancers, theatre makers, performers, martial artist, vocalists etc. The sessions are suitable both for attendees who work with performance, and those who have no such ambition. We believe that thinking-though-the-body can offer useful and unexpected tools to anyone who has one.

A series of screenings accompanied with discussions co-facilitated by a climate activist from Guatemala. The aim of this program is to engage the Rietveld/Sandberg with the subject of climate justice.

Radio Rietveld is a student run platform which mediates audio content across the academy.
This mediation is made through streaming and archiving content, as well as hosting events and other projects. The goal is to make connections and launch inter-department initiatives with broadcasting as the medium.

The School Garden is a group of people and plants. It is a place where things grow and compost. A green connection between the Sandberg Institute and Rietveld Academie, with students as well as all agents, moving between and around them.

A performative gig which gave the viewers a premise: they are coming to a fashion show in which they can participate as any desired tupe of model: if you want to go for the walk, go and smash it, if you rather feel more like a decorative plant, also come along! This project was established to create a modulable wind power station for domestic use. The goal was to design a free open source file for the community of this school. So that students, teachers, visitors and members of staff can print their own wind turbine designed for their homes.

The Sound-Studio at the Academy will be accessible on Saturdays for making music and teaching one another instruments. Therefore instruments are provided and a time schedule has been developed.

The Sonic Archive is an audio guide through the Gerrit Rietveld Academie that can be applied by everybody with a smartphone.
The project follows two main functions: Firstly, making the Academie more accessible from the outside but also for insiders. Secondly: over time it will construct an archive of stored sound pieces.

Pavilion Elsewheres is a one-year duration project that consists in providing a platform for students to make the visual identity of the Glass Pavilion’s content. The Glass Pavilion is an autonomous platform for students from Rietveld and Sandberg Instituut to gather, experiment, collaborate, discuss and show their work. It has a fixed location and set space limitations and its visual identity is the first approach for the students to get informed of its
Events: its design is a way of communicating what is happening and invites the community to hold space in it.
Asian Union Rietveld/Sandberg
For the first half of 2019/2020 academic year, Asian Union hosts two sets of conversations with artists and curators, and two screening events. The remaining events are scheduled for November 25, and mid-January 2020.
This research project is a collaboration with the NGO Tropenbos Suriname (Wageningen) and focuses on the history of the Saamaka people and recent work on participatory 3D mapping as a form of agency against the dispossession of their land. This collaborative research will be shared with the Rietveld/Sandberg community at an event in spring 2020.
