PRACTICAL INFORMATION

To submit your project idea, you must fill out the application form. Please attach in the form a filled-in budget template, which you can find a link (the tab ‘template example’ shows an example of a filled-in budget). Please copy this to your personal drive, fill it in and share an unrestricted link on your application form. 

For this Funding Round we will organize a final assembly around the first half of December to socialize the processes, results, and learnings of all the selected projects. Please note it is important that you attend this meeting too! We will keep you informed.

In what ways may art be a vehicle for these matters? 

And what can we imagine emerging from collectivity?

For our Open Call - Fall Funding Round 2023, we, Student Council, extend a warm invitation for you to propose ways of assembling. We are curious to see how you want to organize, imagine, facilitate, and later on, archive an assembly and how they can fuse to artistic, sonic, silent, political and emotional practices. Together, we want to explore imaginative and traditional means of assemblies through making use of the school’s resources. 

Assemblies as spaces for the student collective to horizontally reflect and strategize toward the change in communities; assemblies as spaces for dreaming and imagination, assemblies as spaces of group building, assemblies as spaces for collective creation, assemblies as spaces of care for the human and more than human relations within our school, assemblies as moments where tremors of excitement and ache can be released and find ways towards reparation and transformation. 

Honoring the multiple lineages of the student and grassroots organizing, we want to create space to practice and facilitate student politics and merge them with art practices to find experimental spaces to be together. We recognize social change is a continuous process and we believe we want to navigate it in solidarity.

For inspiration on the theme, you can look at the works of Ruangrupa curating Documenta Fifteen, The theater of the Oppressed by Augusto Boal, The Art of Assembly web archive by Florian Malzaher, the Arte Util archive, Ensayos de Flora Onirica by Daniel Godinez.

We are offering a budget of up to €2500 for caring and community-building assembly projects. The purpose of our funding is to support community-engaging projects and offer resources for you to organize and collaborate around topics of your interest.  

We encourage you to use creatively what the school and our community already have to offer :

• Present proposals in collaboration between Sandberg and Rietveld students. 
• Get in touch with existing Sandberg and Rietveld collectives making use of different resources. 
• Get in touch with teachers, activists, artists or other facilitators you would like to work with. 
• Think about the library, the pavilion, the garden, the living room, etc.
• Think about the publication platforms such as SandbergPUB, Radio Rietveld, Rietveld Journal, BYOB. 
• Imagine even doing inter-school assemblies!

Below are the CRITERIA for the 2023 Fall Funding Round, established by the members of the Student Council. We urge participants to keep assemblies in brave and respectful spaces, where problems are treated firmly and people are treated softly. 

You can apply alone or with a group of people, you can apply cross-departmentally, with a research-based project, something performative, something playful, or something less visible. The project must have a public program or activities open to the community. Each project is thoroughly read and discussed by a jury, composed of student members of the Student Council and a guest. The decision to fund a project is based on how well it fits within the guidelines below as well as the theme for this term’s round.

• The project socially engages with and benefits the Rietveld and Sandberg community.
• The funding allows space for experimentation, failure, and projects with less tangible results. We are hoping for projects that are ambitious and community-oriented.
• For the 2023 Fall Funding Open Call, we are encouraging projects that will follow the theme **Tremble and Assemble: Practicing Collectivity**.
• You need to design a type of assembly, propose any form of holding the space, and find a solution to archive or document what happens there. The shape that these processes take is completely up to you. (you can see examples and inspirations on the references we offer)  
• Before doing the final re-fund we will ask you to show us evidence of your process and your assembly memories. We will also ask you to share images  and other materials with us so we can share them in our web page and instagram accounts. 
• You must attend our Open Office Hours to discuss your project with one of our members. This is a moment to get feedback on the project and ask questions. Sign up HERE*. These are in-person meetings with members of the Student Council. Here you can ask any question or discuss subjects you would like advice on. If you are unsure if you should apply with your project, have questions about the process, want to find collaborators, feel overwhelmed by writing a project proposal and need support - or anything else - you can schedule a time to talk to us in the week of Monday October 9th - Friday October 13th. You can also reach out to us via email and free to contact us if you’re not able to make it to these open office hours, we will do our best to find other times to meet you.
• To correctly submit your project idea, you must fill out the application form by October 16th at 11am. If you run into any technical issues, email us immediately (studentcouncil@rietveldacademie.nl).
• Only current students can be listed as project coordinators.
• Teachers and staff can be listed as collaborators and hence paid a fee for their advisor role.
• Please consider the availability and feasibility of using spaces within school with facilities@rietveldacademie.nl before applying for the funding to check if storage or the location of your choice is available. 
• For this open call we are also collaborating with Daniel Godínez Nivón. 
• The project does not necessarily have to physically take place within the campus, as long as the impact of your project is clear and felt within the community. Please indicate the venue or public space you are considering for your project. WE encourage 
• You can apply for a minimum of €600 and a maximum of €2500. You do not need to reach the maximum of €2500.
• When you submit your application, you need to inform the Student Council if there is any additional funding from other sources for the project.
• For the project budget, use our spreadsheet template. It’s mandatory to use the template and send it to us as a .XLSX document.
• Guest tutors and speakers can be paid a maximum €200 for a half-day and €300 for a full day. Paying current students is NOT possible.
• We are only funding (paper) printing at the academy or other DIY methods of publishing.
• Does your guest need a place to stay? There are short-stay options through school. Please discuss this during the open office hours. We are funding train/bus transportation for this funding round.
• Equipment purchases are eligible as long as they are necessary for the realization of your project. Equipment has to be returned to the Student Council so we can offer it to other students for future projects.
• Your project receipts need to be sent in before December 1st. The project should be finished before the Christmas holidays.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The Student Council is trying to make the application and funding process as easy and intuitive as possible through this online form.

To apply you MUST come to our open office hour. In this meeting, we will make sure your application fits these criteria, offer feedback, and answer questions you may have. We will have open office hours in the week of October 9th, Please sign up to schedule an open office meeting.

• If your application is successful, you will need to include the Student Council logo in your communication to students and share all your posters, photos, etc. with us.
• By participating in this funding round you agree to participate in several meetings and workshops with the Student Council that will support you in the realisation of your project. For example, we will be hosting an introduction event where we will go over the funding booklet which explains the ins and outs of the financial administration and documentation system, as well as an end-of-year barrel with all those who were funded.
• If your application is successful, you will need to document your working process and use our suggested google-drive infrastructure to keep the Student Council updated. You will be informed in detail about this during the introduction event. You must submit the necessary materials in order for your money to be refunded.
