The Student Council was originally formed with representatives from student-organised initiatives within the school, but we are constantly looking for fresh minds to join us.
We want to engage and encourage students to play a more active role in shaping the school. Student voices are crucial! We see ourselves as a bridge connecting students, staff and teachers with information and resources. This school is not just an assemblage of individual makers, but a place where we care for one another. As a council, we want to lend a hand, share knowledge, and listen carefully.
Through our activities we want to cultivate an even ground for all students and work for greater transparency within the administrative structures of the institution.
We have written minutes of most of our meetings, feel free to ask.

Can Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut become radically inclusive structures? An intra-curricular initiative is working actively between and beyond the structures and discourses of the academy to unsettle the Rietveld and Sandberg from the roots up, supporting existing initiatives, while also developing outreach programs, drawing in new perspectives, and making the context of the academy more inclusive to other voices, minds and bodies. In 2018, Unsettling Rietveld Sandberg began working towards a policy on inclusion and diversity in the academy.

Manifested in 2018, Asian Union was born in seeking to broaden the boundaries of limitation that derive from the misconceptions of Asian Cultures in the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut. Though there are many different connotations per individual background with the term Asian, we do and welcome everyone who defines themselves as “Asian”. There are ongoing weekly meetings during the semester, conducted through online and offline.

The LCU is an initiative within the Rietveld and Sandberg aiming to rebuild the space we hold within the school by nurturing our mixed community of students with a more inclusive and diverse approach.

The circle is a student body, which looks to deepen and complicate the role the student body plays within the Sandberg Instituut; whether in relation to the courses, the formal structures of the school or, most importantly, in relation to each other. We aim to do this by supporting and programming peer to peer and student led initiatives, by collating experiences and discussing issues that the students face, by promoting cross course dialogue and by paying close attention to the social life of the institution. Importantly we look to do all of this at the level of the student body, instead of deferring to the administrative structures of the school.

The MR* is the participation council in which representatives of the staff and of the students are assembled.
The MR has fourteen seats of which seven are for students representation and seven for staff representation (teachers, workshops and administration). The MR deals with issues concerning the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut. It advises the Board of Directors on matters such as the quality of the education, employment, diversity, budget, work pressure, and other.
The Board of Directors must ask the MR for its advice and, in some cases, its agreement upon a number of issues for which this agreement is legally required. The aim of the MR is to participate in the improvement of the quality of the education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut. It meets about eight times a year to discuss the matter at stake. The MR meetings are open to members of the academic community.
Addressing the MR or requesting information is possible by writing to: mr@rietveldacademie.nl
* MR stands for ‘Medezeggenschapsraad’, or Participation Council.
